Montgomery Mural Finds a Home

Each year, The Virginia Children’s Book Festival (VCBF) invites local artist Monty Montgomery to collaborate with an author to create an interactive mural with the children present at the festival.  The Virginia Children's Book Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to creating lifelong readers, regardless of circumstance. Since 2014, the VCBF has reached more than 50,000 children through our festival, outreach programs, and book distributions.

Monty Montgomery is a 1998 graduate of Longwood University in 1998. Montgomery currently resides in San Diego, CA. In recent years he has begun focusing on collaborative projects with other artists that play with the juxtaposition of disparate styles with the goal of stretching the boundaries of what each artist does individually.  This mural is a prime example of his recent collaborations.  Monty Montgomery and Peter Brown, author of The Wild Robot (inspiration for the mural) worked together on this 16X6 foot mural that now calls home to Prince Edward County Middle School.

"The 2017 Virginia Children's Book Festival collaborative mural titled "The Wild Robot" with Peter Brown and the children from across the state of Virginia has now been installed in its new permanent home with Prince Edward County Public Schools at the Middle School location in Farmville, Virginia. Thanks so much to all the talented children for their hard work on helping bring this mural to life and to everyone who contributed on the creation and installation of this mural. A special thanks to my parents, Steve and Dianne Montgomery for their continued dedication to the Virginia Children's Book Festival. I hope the students and staff enjoy this mural for many years to come. Please come join us October 17-19, 2018 at Longwood University | Longwood Center for the Visual Arts for the VCBF 2018! Let's bring another mural to life! " -Monty Montgomery

“I know the students will be thrilled and amazed when they return and see this larger than life mural in the main hall of their school.  This mural represents so much. Literature, of course, a reminder of a book most of our children have read, but also it represents the fact that dreams come true and hard work pays off.  Monty is a local, he went to middle school here in Virginia not too far from Farmville and then graduated from Longwood University.  He has celebrity status.  Our children here in rural Virginia can dream big and achieve success too!” -Jenn Kinne
