Dr. Johnson

After almost twenty years of serving children and families at the school-based level, Dr. Johnson moved to central office as the Leadership Support Specialist and, eventually, the Executive Director of Principal Support in Baltimore City, where she monitored and supported the principals and leadership teams of secondary schools, including restart and turnaround schools. In addition to her leadership in Baltimore City, she also served as the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Instruction in Elgin, Illinois.  There she facilitated the re-design and implementation of new guidelines for the identification and enrollment of students in the district-wide gifted program and collaboratively designed an enrichment program for district seniors with Elgin Community College.

Dr. Barbara A. Johnson is a life-long educator with over twenty-five years of experience in K-12 education.  She has served in several positions ranging from classroom teacher to principal, assistant superintendent and executive director.

She began her career in Fairfax County Public Schools as a middle and high school English teacher, and eventually became an administrator in Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland.  Further, she was a principal in both the District of Columbia Public Schools and Baltimore City Public Schools.

During these experiences, Dr. Johnson continued to engage the school teams, families and community partners in the spirit of transparency to improve and increase opportunities for students.   She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Rhetoric and Communications and Sociology from the University of Virginia, a Master’s degree in Secondary English Education from the University of Virginia, a Master’s degree in Supervision and Administration from Johns Hopkins University and a doctorate in Educational Policy and Leadership from the George Washington University.
