The Prince Edward Middle School Boys Basketball Team finished the job in dramatic fashion last night, defeating Mecklenburg Middle School 41–38 in an overtime championship battle. The Eagles delivered an outstanding performance from start to finish in a game filled with energy, intensity, and momentum swings.

From the opening tip, the contest was fast-paced, with both teams trading baskets and answering every run. In the end, the Eagles’ clutch defense and late-game execution proved to be the difference. Kingston Thompson sparked a crucial momentum shift by knocking down three consecutive three-pointers across the third and fourth quarters, igniting both his teammates and the crowd. In overtime, Jazil Lyles delivered one of the biggest moments of the night, completing a three-point play to give the Eagles a one-point lead. Moments later, Daitwaine Cordell secured a clutch rebound, called timeout to protect possession, and then calmly sank two free throws with just 10 seconds remaining to seal the championship victory.

With the win, the Eagles captured their third championship in the last four years, continuing an impressive run of excellence for the program.

“Congratulations to Coach Gould and the Prince Edward Middle School boys basketball team for bringing home the championship trophy,” said Dr. Jones. “Our Eagles won an overtime thriller, 41–38, against Mecklenburg — it was an outstanding game from start to finish. Thank you to all of the Eagle fans who made the trip to Lawrenceville. The Eagles were definitely in the house. Our middle school cheerleaders did a fabulous job keeping the crowd energized — we are proud of you all.”

Principal Clark-Reed also praised the team’s accomplishment. “I am incredibly proud of our boys’ basketball team for capturing this year’s championship title. This victory represents far more than a trophy. It reflects discipline, determination, sportsmanship, and strong character.”

“These young men earned this moment through hard work, accountability, and integrity,” Clark-Reed added. “What makes this win especially meaningful is how they carried themselves, showing compassion and respect to their opponents when the final buzzer sounded. That is the mark of true leadership.”

A special thank you goes out to the parents, school officials, and supporters who provided unwavering encouragement throughout the game. The school also commends its outstanding cheerleaders for their school spirit and enthusiasm, as well as the coaching staff for their steadfast leadership and mentorship.

“At Prince Edward County Middle School, we are committed to developing student-athletes — students first, athletes second,” Clark-Reed continued. “This championship reflects their dedication to excellence in the classroom, in conduct, and on the court. Our entire school community celebrates this proud achievement, and we stand proudly behind our Eagles.”

Congratulations, the players, coaches, cheerleaders, and the entire Eagle community on an unforgettable championship season.
